Chapter Twenty-Two

Paige stood at the kitchen sink, filling the coffeepot with water. She had to be at Max’s Coffee Shop in forty-five minutes for the breakfast shift. She yawned and stretched, waiting for the coffee to finish. As soon as the coffee stopped dripping, she grabbed her mug and filled it with milk and a teaspoon of raw sugar for the extra kick. She took the mug to the bathroom and turned on the shower.

She reminisced about the evening reading with Trevor. It was charming that he wanted to hang out with her. And she believed he did read a couple chapters of the book he brought, in between the times he sat gazing at her.

After showering and getting dressed, she looked at her watch. She had five minutes before needing to get in her car to make it to work. Enough time to check email. The publishing company said they would decide on June first, yesterday, about the spring internship. They didn’t say how long it would take to notify applicants, but Paige hoped it would be quick. She was not disappointed when she saw an email from Ms. Maron in her in-box.

Dear Ms. Bell,

I am thrilled to inform you that we have chosen you as our spring intern! I hope this is some consolation with the mix-up over the summer internship.

The internship will begin on January 5th. Please let me know by June 15th if you accept this position or not.

Congratulations!

Sincerely,

Leslie Maron, Director of H.R.

Garland Wilson Publishing

Fantastic! She got it! It was real this time! Losing out on the summer internship still stung, but at least she got to meet Trevor because of that mix-up, so it wasn’t all bad. She thought about whom to notify first. Macey and Anna Lee wanted to know, and she had to tell her mom right away. It was early, so she sent a quick text.

Paige: Hi mom! I got the spring internship at Garland Wilson! Super excited! I’ll call tonight to talk–off to work at the coffee shop. Luv U!

It was way too early to call or text Anna Lee and Macey–she would call each of them once she got off work at the Max’s. She responded to Ms. Maron, accepting the offer and felt a rush of relief and a hint of sadness when she hit send. She pushed the sadness aside. This is what she wanted. Right?

She grabbed her purse and keys and hustled out of the apartment.
